More from the Guide to Dating (See previous entry)

One of the chapters is actually titled "Which one of my personalities shall I be tonight?"

There is one paragraph that almost made me pee my pants. Mix is the guy she likes (I dunno, it was the 50s).

"When I am with Mix I keep conversation going. It reduces the time that might be given over in a weak moment to a sexual urge that knows no stopping. I also take advantage of every opportunity I have to enjoy Mix in the company of other girls and their dates. Mix likes the foursomes, too. We have lots of fun."

This was also one of the funniest paragraphs in the book.

"Contrary to what most girls think, boys do not like to see them in low-neck dresses, thin blouses, short skirts, and other such revealing garb. Sights like these are repulsive to boys. Of course, many men like, or pretend to like, pornographic literature, pictures of nude girls, burlesque shows, and other sensual experiences. But these interests have no connection whatsoever with their love and dating interests. THey are two completely different aspects of their lives."

"On a date always be sure to wear something that covers you adequately. If you happen to have a date for a picnic or a game of tennis and plan to wear shorts, be sure they are long enough. If you have a date to go swimming, wear a bathing suit that is modest. Your boy friend will be ashamed of you if you are dressed in indecent attire. You cannot expect him to love you if he is ashamed of you."

"When your boy friend skids on the newly waxed floors and falls flat on his back, bite your lower lip. Bite it hard. And harder. You won't laugh. Try it next time. It's a good trick to know, for girls our age are as susceptible to giggles as babies are to measles. Sometimes it is extremely annoying to our friends, boys especially, to see us in those hysterical states. You know you are sorry about the accident - not glad! By laughing you are giving a wrong impression of yourself."

"Because boys generally like sports and mechanics, while we girls go in more for embroidery and knitting, we get strange ideas that boys' interests must be completely different from ours. This is not so. Each sex normally has a few special interests of it own, but on the whole boys and girls think alike."

"As a general rule, boys are also more given to making humorous remarks than girls. Some boys seem especially to delight in joking with and teasing pretty girls. But this seeming interest in other girls does not mean that our boy friends no longer love us. This temporary and meaningless physical attraction for a pretty girl is boubtless an innocuous manifestation of the sex drive. Love and sex are separated in men's minds. Remember that. Make a special point of remembering it after you are married so that you do not fly into a jealous rage over trivialities."

"After you have sat down, your date will help you move your chair closer to the table. Be as lightweight as you can. Next you will give him your order, and he will give it to the waiter or waitress. This saves confusion."

"Some college boys recently revealed a startling fact to a woman I know who was conducting a survey on dating. They told her, frankly, that they have two kinds of dates - one kind strictly for satisfying fleshly pleasures; and the other kind in search of girls whom they might wish to marry. When a boy goes out with a girl for the first time, he does not generally know which kind of date he will be having. The moral standards of the girl determine it.

While it is never flattering, of course, to know that a boy would expect sexual liberties from a girl who has accepted his date in all good faith, she might keep in mind, however, just how he may be thinking in the matter. If given a little discipline, he may still turn out to be the true gentleman she believes herself to be having a date with.

This peculiar reasoning of a man's mind helps to explain why some men have had sexual relations with women before marriage. But notice! The women with whom they have had sexual experiences are not the ones they have married... unless under some kind of unpleasant or unusual circumstances they have done so."
